Joshua's Monogram

I was inspired to do this monogram for Joshua at his christening. When I saw him wearing the bonnet made by Ester Kiely and trimmed with Jackie Magnin’s Headford Lace, I decided I had to make something special to remember this occasion. Joshua is our ‘Headford Lace baby’ and has been part of the project even in-utero.

It was when Headford Lace Project visited Traditional Lacemakers of Ireland in Cork that I started this project. I consulted with Kay, the Mountmellick Lace teacher and we decided on the most suitable stitches. It is worked on a heavy cotton satin jean using a white cotton thread for the stitches. I felt that the white on white was suitable for a christening. It will always hold special memories for his mother Giulliana Victor Harte of the christening and our Cork trip.

Very fine examples of Mountmellick work can be seen at the the Mountmellick Museum in Co. Laois. It is well worth a visit.
